Zoleka Mandela was born in South Africa on 9 April, 1980. She is the daughter of Zinzi Mandela, and her parents separated when she was a child. As per tradition, any man who impregnates a woman is expected to pay damages or inhlawulo. Therefore, Zoleka grew up with the Mandela name and was raised by her aunt, Zenani Mandela, who is the oldest daughter of Nelson Mandela and Winnie Mandela.

 

Zoleka Mandela Family Life

Zoleka has four children – two sons and two daughters. Unfortunately, she lost her daughter, Zenani Mandela, in 2010 when she was only three years old. Zoleka’s son, Zenawe Zibuyile, also died in 2011 during infancy. However, she still has two children, a daughter named Zanyiwe Zenzile, born in 2014, and a son named Zwelami, born in 2003.

After losing her daughter in a car accident, Zoleka started a road safety campaign known as the Long Short Walk. The campaign, spearheaded by the Global Commission on Road Safety, aimed to raise awareness about road use and prevent road accidents in South Africa.

 

Zoleka Mandela Marriage

Zoleka married Thierry Bashala in April 2014, and they had their first child together later that same year. Thierry had stalked and followed Zoleka, pretending to sell jeans, but he was really after her number. Despite warning him to stop calling or stalking her, they continued to talk, which eventually led to their marriage in 2014.

 

Drug Addiction and Breast Cancer Journey

Zoleka suffered sexual abuse at the age of eight, which led her to turn to drugs as a coping mechanism. In 2011, she was absent from her daughter’s burial because she was admitted to the hospital following a drug-induced psychotic episode. In addition to her struggles with addiction, Zoleka was also diagnosed with breast cancer. However, she is a survivor and uses her experiences to raise awareness about the disease. She believes that the fight against cancer starts in one’s mind and by having a positive attitude. In August 2022, she was diagnosed with a type of cancer called bone metastasis, which cannot be cured or eradicated. On 4 May 2023, she posted a picture celebrating her last radiotherapy session. She has since accepted that her condition is terminal.

Zoleka Mandela Foundation

Zoleka established her foundation in 2013, motivated by her breast cancer journey, her daughter’s death, and her life experiences. The foundation focuses on uplifting people socially and educates them about social responsibilities, road safety, and breast cancer. It also provides assistance to young people on issues related to accountability, volunteerism, and personal growth.
