This is the biography of Zari Hassan, also known as Zari The Boss Lady, a South Africa-based Ugandan singer, socialite, businesswoman and actress. She is the CEO and heir of Brooklyn City College (BCC), a South African-based educational institute. She is also known for her glamorous lifestyle, fashion sense, and active presence on social media. She has five children from two different relationships.
Zari Hassan Early Life and Education
Zari Hassan was born on 23 September 1980 in Jinja, Uganda. She is of mixed heritage; her maternal grandfather is Indian, while her grandmother is Ugandan. On the other hand, her paternal grandfather is Somali, while her grandmother comes from Burundi. She grew up with four siblings: Zuleha, Abdul Karim, Zara, and Asha Hassan.
Zari discovered her musical talent at a very early age. She started singing in primary school and continued even after obtaining her bachelor’s degree. She also performed in competitions and musical events, winning awards for the best actress in two consecutive years.
After her high school education, Zari Hassan moved to Kampala, the capital of Uganda, where she made money by performing karaoke in different hangouts. At one point, she took a break from music to complete her academic pursuits. She then moved to London where she earned her diploma in cosmetology.
Career and Business
Zari Hassan returned to Uganda in 2000. She recorded her first single, ‘Oliwange’ in 2007. The song was very successful and earned her the Best East African Video of the Year nomination in the Africa Channel O awards.
She later moved to South Africa, where she met and married Ivan Semwanga, a wealthy businessman and socialite. They co-founded Brooklyn City College (BCC), a diverse and progressive educational institute with campuses in Pretoria, Polokwane, Durban, Johannesburg, Nelspruit, Vereeniging and Rustenburg. She became BCC’s CEO and heir after Semwanga’s death in 2017. Zari also owns a cosmetics shop and pursues her music career in South Africa.
She is also a reality television personality and has appeared in shows like ‘Diamond and Zari’, ‘The Boss Lady’ and ‘Young, Famous and African’. She is also an influencer and philanthropist who supports various causes such as education, health and women empowerment.
Zari Hassan Personal Life and Relationships
Zari Hassan was married to Ivan Semwanga from 2011 to 2013. They had three sons together: Pinto, Quincy and Didy. They divorced in 2013 after Hassan accused Semwanga of physically abusing her. Semwanga died in May 2017 after suffering a heart attack.
She then dated Tanzanian artist Diamond Platnumz from 2014 to 2018. They had two children together: Latifah Dangote (Tiffah) and Prince Nillan. They broke up in 2018 after Diamond admitted to cheating on her with another woman.
In 2022, Zari started dating Shakib Lutaaya and they had a wedding in 2023.
