Early Life

Roy Thabo “Smol” Mabogwane was born and raised in Soshanguve, Pretoria, South Africa, on April 24, 1986. Growing up in a musically inclined family, Thabo was exposed to a wide range of genres, from traditional African rhythms to international pop and rock. His parents, both music lovers, encouraged his early interest in music. Thabo’s older siblings, Tshepo and Lerato, also played a significant role in shaping his musical tastes. This diverse musical background would later influence his unique sound and style.

Smol completed his primary and went to Pretoria Technical High Schoolsecondary education in Soshanguve. He proceeded to Tshwane South TVET College for his tertiary Education.

Thabo Smol Music Career

Smol’s entry into the music industry began in the early 2000s when he started DJing at local events and parties. His talent and dedication quickly gained recognition, leading to gigs at prominent clubs and festivals across South Africa. As a solo artist, Thabo released several successful singles and remixes, establishing himself as a rising star in the electronic music scene.

Thabo Smol In Black Motion

Smol met his future collaborator, Bongani “Mörda” Mohosana, at a music production workshop in Pretoria. They bonded over their shared passion for house music and began experimenting with sounds and beats together. In 2010, they formed Black Motion, combining their talents to create a unique sound that blended Afro-house, tribal, and electronic elements. The duo’s innovative style resonated with audiences, propelling them to national and international success. During live shows, Mörda, then Murdah Bongz, would mix while Thabo played drums. Throughout their career, Black Motion released six critically acclaimed albums, collaborated with renowned artists, and performed at major festivals like Ultra Music Festival and Tomorrowland.

However, in 2022, Black Motion announced their split, citing creative differences and a desire to pursue solo projects. Mörda went solo and Kabelo “Problem Child Ten83” Koma replaced him. In 2023, the two released the album Rebirth Of The Drum.

Thabo Smol Personal Life

In 2018, Smol and his girlfriend Rakgadi Koetle welcomed their daughter, Refentse. They, however, broke up six months later before reuniting. Thabo and Rakgadi broke up for good in 2020. The two are now co-parenting.
