This is the biography of Siviwe Gwarube, a South African politician who is the current Minister of Basic Education.

 

Early Life and Education

Siviwe Gwarube was born on June 14, 1989. She grew up in a politically engaged household, where discussions about democracy, equality, and human rights were commonplace.

She attended Rhodes University and attained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Law, Politics and Philosophy from 2008 to 2011. She then went to the University of the Western Cape where she graduated with a Bachelor’s honors in Political Science and Government from 2015 to 2017. Her academic journey fueled her passion for public service.

Siviwe Gwarube  Political Career

Gwarube’s activism began during her university years. She joined student organisations, organising protests and advocating for affordable education, gender equality, and youth empowerment.

In 2012, Gwarube became the spokesperson to the leader of the Democratic Alliance in Parliament until 2014. In 2014, she joined the Western Cape Government as a media Liaison Officer. She spent eight months in this role. In 2015, the young politician became the Western Cape Department of Health Head of Ministry. In this role, she was the Chief of Staff in the office of the Health MEC. Gwarube spent two years in this role.

A month after leaving the department, Gwarube was appointed the Executive Director of Communications for the DA until 2019. In 2020, she became the spokesperson of the Leader of the Opposition in the South African Parliament, a DA post.

In 2019, she was elected to the National Assembly as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the DA. Three years later, she became the Chief Whip of the Official Opposition in parliament. Following the 2024 polls, she was voted for and became a legislator for another term.

Following the coalition agreement between the ANC, DA, and nine other political parties, President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Siviwe Gwarube as the new Minister of Basic Education.
