This is the biography of Sivuyile Ngesi, popularly known as Siv Ngesi. He is a multi-talented South African actor, comedian, presenter, and producer. Renowned for his versatility and dynamic presence in the entertainment industry, Ngesi has made significant contributions across various media, including film, television, and theatre.

Early Life

Siv Ngesi was born on October 18, 1985, in Gugulethu, Western Cape, South Africa. Born into a Xhosa family of four children, Ngesi spent his early childhood in Gugulethu before moving to Langa and later Pinelands. His mother, Jacqueline, is a school principal. Ngesi lost his father in a car accident in 2004. He attended Pinelands High School and trained at the Waterfront Theatre School and Jazzart Dance Theatre. Due to financial constraints, he was unable to attend university, a struggle he shared during the #FeesMustFall movement.

Career

Early Career

Siv Ngesi began his career as a child actor, playing Gavroche in the musical Les Misérables on tour in Asia. Notably, he performed a piece from the musical for Nelson Mandela.

Television and Film

Siv Ngesi made his television debut in the Disney Channel Original Movie Zenon: Z3 as Bobby and his feature film debut in The World Unseen. He guest-starred as Thomas in 24: Redemption, a 2008 television film sequel to the Fox action series 24, and had a small role in the Nelson Mandela and Francois Pienaar biopic Invictus.

Comedy and Theatre

Siv Ngesi has also established himself as a successful comedian, launching a one-man comedy show called DeKaf. Ngesi gained prominence with his one-man comedy show DeKaf, which ran for three years at the National Arts Festival, winning the Golden Ovation Award for Best Comedy in 2010. He later toured the show nationally.

In 2012, he starred opposite Rob van Vuuren in the crime comedy film Copposites. Alongside van Vuuren and Danielle Bischoff, he created the children’s book series Florence & Watson and its accompanying stage show.

Reality TV and Hosting

In 2014, Ngesi competed in the seventh season of Strictly Come Dancing, placing fifth. Since 2015, he has hosted the magazine show The Man Cave, earning one out of two nominations for Best TV Presenter at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs).

In 2016, he began hosting and producing the reality cooking competition show Jou Ma se Chef. He also had a recurring role as Udo in the third season of the Starz series Black Sails.

Recent Work

In 2017, Ngesi produced 14 shows at the National Arts Festival, earning a Spirit of the Fringe award. Among his shows that year was Siv-ilised.

In 2019, Ngesi appeared in three films: Knuckle City, Bhai’s Cafe, and Kaalgat Karel. In 2020, he joined the cast of the Showmax drama Still Breathing as T-Boss.

In 2021, Ngesi created and began performing under the drag persona Sivanna. He hosted the Cape Town Drag Brunch that December. He also joined the Showmax comedy Tali’s Baby Diary for its second season and the Netflix drama Jiva!. His recurring role as Victor in Dam earned him a SAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2022.

In January 2022, it was announced that Ngesi had joined the cast of the Gina Prince-Bythewood-directed and Viola Davis-produced film The Woman King.
