Education and Academic Pursuits

Siphesihle Ndaba’s pursuit of knowledge and the arts began early in life. A gifted student, she consistently ranked among the top 10 scholars during her school years. Her exceptional academic prowess led her to the prestigious Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG), where she thrived academically and artistically. Her active involvement in music, including performances in the school’s annual musical concerts and participation in a jazz band, showcased her multifaceted talents.

While her love for music initially drew her towards pursuing a musical education, Ndaba’s path took a transformative turn after a conversation that convinced her to explore other avenues.

She embarked on a journey to Rhodes University, where she pursued a Bachelor of Social Science degree, majoring in psychology, economics, and drama. The decision to embrace both arts and science reflected her insatiable curiosity and determination to excel.

During her time at Rhodes University, Ndaba’s passion for the arts continued to flourish. Notably, in her second year, she crafted and directed a production addressing the critical issue of rape culture on campus for the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

As she progressed through her academic journey, Siphesihle Ndaba’s dedication culminated in her graduation with an Honours degree in Dramatic Arts, specializing in acting, physical theatre, and applied theatre. This achievement underscored her commitment to her craft and her aspiration to utilize drama as a powerful therapeutic tool.

Emergence in the Arts and Acting Career

Siphesihle started shaping her acting career while still a student.

In an interview with Drum, she said that at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, it was compulsory for each student to have two arts subjects; hers were dance and drama.

Her burgeoning acting career was a natural progression of her artistic inclinations. Channeling her energy and creativity, she directed the thought-provoking play “Skinned” at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival in 2018, while she was in her 3rd year.

This ambitious undertaking explored the joy and resilience of black females in a marginalized society, showcasing Siphesihle Ndaba’s ability to tell compelling and meaningful stories through her work.

Gomora

Siphesihle Ndaba’s breakthrough in television came with the role of Mazet in the Mzansi Magic telenovela “Gomora.”

Her ascent to this pivotal role, though, took an unforeseen turn as she stood on the cusp of embarking on her master’s studies in art management.

Amidst her academic pursuits and while abroad on an academic travel bursary in London, an extraordinary opportunity beckoned. Although physically distant from the primary audition, Siphesihle Ndaba ingeniously submitted her audition via videotape.

Remarkably, the producers of “Gomora” were profoundly captivated by her performance, even in her absence. Upon her return, Siphesihle Ndaba further showcased her remarkable acting prowess in an in-person audition, securing the coveted role through her exceptional talent and dedication.

In the series, Siphesihle Ndaba portrayed  Mazet, a character embroiled in intricate criminal activities. Her character resonated deeply with audiences, unveiling her ability to authentically inhabit multifaceted roles.
