Early Life and Education

Samkelo Ndlovu, also known as Samu or Samurai Ndlovu, was born and raised in Alexandra Township, South Africa. She attended Fairways Primary School for her primary education and completed her high school education at Sandringham High School in 2007. Growing up, Samkelo developed proficiency in multiple languages, including Xhosa, Zulu, English, Sotho, and Tswana.

Samkelo Ndlovu Career

Samkelo Ndlovu’s journey in the entertainment industry began after studying at AFDA – the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance. Shortly after graduating, she secured her first major role as Lerato in the soccer comedy feature film Taka Taka, where she acted alongside renowned comedians Trevor Noah and Kagiso Lediga.

Following her debut, Samkelo went on to showcase her acting prowess in various roles. She portrayed the character Nkosazana in the eleventh season of the SABC1 AIDS drama television series Soul City in 2011. From 2012 to 2013, she captivated audiences with her portrayal of the wild child Lira Khumalo in the Mzansi Magic telenovela Inkaba. She also appeared in popular SABC1 dramas like Zone 14, Intersexions, and Sokhulu & Partners, as well as the SABC1 soapie Generations in a supporting role.

In 2011, Samkelo landed the role of Esther in the Thapelo Moekoena-produced feature film Skyf – The Movie. However, it was her debut on the television series Rhythm City in July 2013, playing the character Lerato, that further elevated her career. Lerato is depicted as Fats’ vain and flirtatious cousin on the show. Samkelo also had a starring role in an episode of the anthology series Mzansi Love: Kasi Style (“Lawless,” Season 2, Episode 6), where she portrayed a young attorney working on a high-profile divorce case.

Samkelo acknowledged that her acting career had consumed much of her time and felt compelled to make the sacrifice necessary to pursue music wholeheartedly.

Personal Life

Samkelo Ndlovu is a proud mother to her child, Ngelosi, which means “Angel” in Xhosa and Zulu. Although the relationship between Samkelo and her baby’s father, Sello Nhlapho, ended, they both contribute to their child’s upbringing.


Samkelo Ndlovu has faced a few controversies throughout her career. In 2021, she made headlines for owing thousands of rands to a local DJ only identified as Lesedithedj. Screenshots of conversations between the actress and the DJ were shared on social media, revealing her avoidance of payment for services rendered during her musical career.

She tagged Samkelo on X formerly Twitter and told her to settle the R12k debt she owed her.

@SamkeloNdlovu PLEASE PAY ME. The venue paid out, and she used the money without telling me, and now she’s avoiding my texts and calls. PLEASE SETTLE THE 12k you owe me!”

In another separate incident, Samkelo found herself in a public altercation with rapper Nomuzi in 2020. She accused Nomuzi Mabena of pouring juice on her. The actress went on to share a video in which she made derogatory remarks about Nomuzi’s weight loss and music career, resulting in a backlash from social media users.
