Early Life and Education

Robert Marawa was born in Vryheid, KwaZulu Natal in South Africa. He grew up in a family with a strong connection to sports and media. Two of his sisters, Gugu Marawa and Vanessa Marawa, have also made a name for themselves in the sports and entertainment industry. Gugu Marawa served as the deputy manager for the South African Senior Men’s National Football Team (Bafana Bafana) and managed the Lamontville Golden Arrows for a period. Vanessa Marawa gained fame by participating in and winning Survivor South Africa: Panama.

Marawa attended Hilton College in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal, and later pursued a Law degree at the University of Witwatersrand in 1992. However, his passion for broadcasting took precedence, and he decided to venture into the media industry.

Robert Marawa Career

Contrary to his academic background, Marawa embarked on a career in media as a presenter. He began his journey as a continuity presenter before transitioning into sports broadcasting. In 1996, he joined SABC1 as a Zulu and English continuity presenter, working with the channel for two years.

In late 1997, Marawa made his mark as an anchor of the popular live soccer show Laduma on Topsport. He had the opportunity to cover the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, anchoring a total of 48 games alongside another anchor. He also hosted a football highlights show called Soccerzone.

In subsequent years, Marawa hosted various soccer shows on Supersport 3 and continued to host his show on Metro FM, called Discovery Sports. He expanded his repertoire by hosting events like the FIFA World Cup and the People’s Celebration Concert. In 2013, he co-hosted the 12th Metro FM Music Awards.

Personal Life

Robert Marawa has had notable relationships with prominent individuals in the South African entertainment industry. He was romantically involved with Zoey Mthiyane, known for her role in Generations: The Legacy. They have a son named Awande, born in 2011. However, their relationship ended in separation, and it is unclear whether they were married.

Following his breakup with Zoey, Marawa entered into a relationship with South African actress, businesswoman, and model, Pearl Thusi. The couple dated for some time, and there were rumors of an impending engagement. However, their relationship took a turn, and Marawa publicly announced their breakup on social media.

Robert Marawa Health Challenges

In recent years, Robert Marawa has faced health challenges related to his heart. He experienced his first heart attack in 2008, shortly after leaving the gym. Another heart attack occurred in June 2017, and the most recent one happened in 2019. Marawa shared the details of his third heart attack on his Twitter account, revealing that he had driven himself to the hospital after experiencing persistent pain. He spent a week in the hospital, with several days in the Intensive Care Unit.
