This is the biography of Renaldo Gouws, a South African politician who is part of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and industrial psychologist. He gained prominence as a spokesperson for the DA in Nelson Mandela Bay, but controversies surrounding his remarks have also drawn attention.

 

Early Life And Education

Renaldo Gouws was born on May 2, 1983, in the small town of Uitenhage, Eastern Cape, South Africa. He attended Hoërskool Brandwag and later pursued higher education at Nelson Mandela University, where he obtained his Master’s Degree in Industrial Psychology in 2010. His academic background equipped him with insights into human behaviour and organisational dynamics.

 

Renaldo Gouws Political Career

Renaldo Gouws has had a dynamic political journey. He joined the Democratic Alliance (DA) in 2012 and quickly rose through the ranks. As the branch chairperson of Ward 2 in Nelson Mandela Bay, he played a pivotal role in local politics. In 2016, Gouws secured a seat on the proportional representation list for the DA, earning a spot in the Nelson Mandela Municipality Council.

In 2019, he won a by-election in Ward 2, where the DA obtained an impressive 94% of the vote. Gouws’s influence expanded when he was elected as the Spokesperson for Economic Development, Tourism, and Agriculture for the DA in Nelson Mandela Bay. In 2024, Gouw was voted into Parliament, but controversy hogged him just as he was sworn in.

Renaldo Gouws Controversies

Gouws has been embroiled in several controversies. Most notably, he faced backlash for racist remarks made in a video that resurfaced on social media. In the video, Gouws used derogatory language, including racial slurs. He published one of the videos in 2008 and another in 2010.

When he was sworn into Parliament, the first video leaked. He apologised for it and said he was not a racist and he was young and irresponsible back then. Another video emerged days later in which he made racist remarks. The DA suspended him as a result.

Despite defending his past comments as youthful indiscretions, the party decided to recall him temporarily while conducting an internal disciplinary investigation. The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) dragged him to the Equality Court hours after his suspension from the DA.

 

Personal Life

Gouws is married to Laurynne Meyer, and they tied the knot in 2014.
