This is the biography of Pieter Groenewald, a prominent South African politician who is the founder of Freedom Front Plus (FF+), a political party advocating for minority rights and Afrikaner nationalism.

 

Early Life and Education

Petrus Johannes “Pieter” Groenewald was born on August 27, 1955, in South Africa. He completed his military service at the Berede Centre in Potchefstroom and achieved a B.luris degree at the Potchefstroom campus of the now North West University. His academic journey continued with a Postgraduate Diploma in Communications, a master’s degree in Management and Development, and a Doctorate in Politics.

Pieter Groenewald Political Career

His 1989 election as an MP for Stilfontein constituency, standing for the Conservative Party (CP), kicked off his long parliamentary politics journey. He then became the Mayor of Stilfontein. His leadership in local government marked the beginning of a remarkable career that would span both provincial and national levels.

At the 1989 South African general election, Groenewald secured a seat in the House of Assembly for the Stilfontein constituency.

In March 1994, Groenewald co-founded the Freedom Front, a party dedicated to safeguarding minority rights and promoting Afrikaner interests. He was elected to the newly established National Assembly the same year. His tenure as a Member of Parliament continued until 1999 when he transitioned to the North West Provincial Legislature.

Groenewald’s dedication to politics brought him back to the National Assembly in 2001. His leadership within the FF+ has been pivotal. He served as the Federal Chairperson from 2011 to 2016 and played a crucial role in shaping the party’s direction. In November 2016, he was elected as the Leader of the Freedom Front Plus, a position he continues to hold.

Pieter Groenewald As Minister of Correctional Services

In July 2024, Groenewald assumed the role of Minister of Correctional Services in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s government. His responsibilities include overseeing correctional facilities and rehabilitation programs.

 

Personal Life

Groenewald’s son, Michal, also contributes to the FF+ as an MP.
