This is the biography of Percy Muzi Tau, a South African professional footballer who plays as a forward for Egyptian Premier League club Al Ahly and the South Africa national team. He is widely regarded as one of the best players in Africa and has won several awards and trophies in his career. His current market value is R311,4 million.


Percy Tau Early Life and Football Career

Tau was born on 13 May 1994 in Witbank, South Africa. He grew up in a large family of eight siblings and was raised by his single mother, Elizabeth Tau. He started playing football at a young age and joined the youth academy of Mamelodi Sundowns, a Premier Soccer League (PSL) club, in 2013.

Tau made his professional debut for Mamelodi Sundowns on 25 February 2014 in a league match against Orlando Pirates. He scored his first goal for the club on 22 March 2014 in a Nedbank Cup match against Golden Arrows. Tau helped Sundowns win the league title in the 2013–14 and 2015–16 seasons, and the CAF Champions League in 2016. He also spent a season on loan at Witbank Spurs, a National First Division (NFD) club, where he scored three goals in 11 appearances.

In the 2017–18 season, Tau had his best season with Sundowns, scoring 11 goals and providing 15 assists in 30 league matches. He was named the PSL Footballer of the Year, the Players’ Player of the Season, and the joint-top scorer of the league. He also won the CAF Super Cup and the CAF Club of the Year award with Sundowns.

In July 2018, Tau signed a four-year contract with EPL club Brighton & Hove Albion for a reported R830,5 million. However, due to work permit complications, he was unable to play for Brighton and went on loan to Belgian clubs.

Tau first joined Union SG, a Belgian second-division club, for the 2018–19 season. He had six goals and eight assists in 23 matches and won the Proximus League Player of the Season award. He also scored four goals in the Belgian Cup, including a hat-trick against Knokke.

Tau then moved to Club Brugge, a Belgian first-division club, for the 2019–20 season. He scored three goals and provided four assists in 18 league matches and helped Brugge win the league title. He also made his debut in the UEFA Champions League, scoring against Real Madrid and assisting against Galatasaray.

Tau spent the 2020–21 season on loan at Anderlecht, another Belgian first division club. He scored four goals and provided two assists in 14 league matches and formed a good partnership with Vincent Kompany, the player-manager of Anderlecht.

In July 2021, Tau signed a two-year contract with Al Ahly, an Egyptian Premier League club, for an undisclosed fee. He became the first South African player to join Al Ahly, the most successful club in Africa. The forward scored his first goal for Al Ahly on 11 August 2021 in a league match against El Gouna. He helped Al Ahly win the league title, the CAF Champions League, and the CAF Super Cup in his first season with the club.

Tau also made history by becoming the highest-scoring South African in the FIFA Club World Cup in December 2023, when he scored his third goal in a 4–2 win over Urawa Reds in the third-place match.

Tau made his debut for the South Africa national team on 17 November 2015 in a friendly match against Angola. He scored his first goal for the national team on 10 June 2017 in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria. He has since become a key player for the national team, scoring 16 goals in 49 appearances.

Tau was part of the South Africa squad that participated in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where he scored two goals and assisted one in five matches. He helped South Africa reach the quarter-finals, where they lost to Nigeria. He was also in the CAF Team of the Tournament.

Tau  is currently the captain of the national team and the leading scorer in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with four goals in four matches.
