This is the biography of South African musician Nomcebo Zikode, one of the best vocalists in the country with a Grammy Award to her name.


Early Life and Education

Nomcebo Nothule Zikode was born on October 28, 1985, in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. She matriculated at Ukusa High School and later pursued higher education at Havatech College, where she obtained a degree in Information technology.


Nomcebo Zikode Music Career

Nomcebo’s passion for music led her to move from her hometown to pursue her dreams. She started her career as a backing vocalist, lending her voice to support various South African artists such as Deborah Fraser, Zahara, Lundi Tyamara, and Nhlanhla Nciza.

Her talent was recognised by Ganyani Entertainment, which signed her and featured her vocals on tracks like “NTO,” “Jabulile,” and the hit single “Emazulwini” in 2018. This song received a nomination for Record of the Year at the South African Music Awards (SAMA).

The turning point in Nomcebo’s career came with her collaboration with Master KG on the global hit “Jerusalema” in 2019. The song achieved number one in many countries and had a viral international dance challenge, catapulting her to international fame.

Building on her newfound recognition, Nomcebo released her debut album, “Xola Moya Wam” in 2020. The album’s lead single of the same name, featuring Master KG, was a commercial success, achieving gold certification within two weeks of its release. The album itself was certified platinum, selling over 150,000 copies within a month.

Nomcebo Zikode Controversy and Endorsements

Despite her success, Nomcebo faced challenges, including controversies over the ownership of her songs and fights with Open Mic Productions, which limited her ability to perform them without label consent. However, she overcame these hurdles and signed a global record deal with Sony/ATV Music in 2020.


Nomcebo Zikode Awards and Recognition

Nomcebo’s talent and contributions to music have been recognised with numerous awards and nominations. She won the Best Female Artist category at the 1st KZN Entertainment Awards in 2020 and received a nomination for Best Dance Album at the 27th South African Music Awards.

In 2023, Nomcebo Zikode won her first Grammy Award for Best Global Music Performance for the song “Bayethe,” alongside Zakes Bantwini and Grammy-winning flutist Wouter Kellerman.
