Nkanyiso Mchunu Career
Early Career Beginnings
Nkanyiso Mchunu’s journey into the world of acting began with a twist of fate. Initially pursuing a career in music, he had a life-altering encounter that shifted his focus towards the theatrical arts.
In 2005, Mchunu’s talent as a musician was recognized when he won an AIDS Song Competition. The support and encouragement he received from the community inspired him to take music more seriously. This achievement led him to share the stage with accomplished musicians Deborah Fraser and Mandoza (Mduduzi Tshabalala). His trajectory altered when, in 2007, he moved to Pretoria with aspirations to study music at Damelin but unfortunately, he failed to get a place.
However, it was a chance meeting with someone claiming to be JR’s aunt that changed his trajectory. While working at a restaurant in Pretoria in 2007, Mchunu encountered this woman who noticed his energy and stage presence. She believed he belonged on stage but not as a musician. Intrigued, he followed her advice to visit the State Theatre and watch a performance. After attending a production called “Rivonia Trial,” Mchunu’s passion for acting was ignited, and he knew he had found his true calling.
And she [said] not that kind of stage and I’m from Pietermaritzburg so I didn’t know much about theatre since there [weren’t] theatres in Pietermaritzburg, so she gave me a huge tip and told me to go to state theatre and watch something. So, I went there I saw a show with one familiar face, which was called Rivonia Trial. When I came out of that show, I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and it wasn’t music,” he says
Motivated by his newfound passion, Mchunu sought an agent and enrolled in the Duma Ndlovu Academy (DNA), a renowned acting institution that provided him with valuable training and opportunities. This marked the beginning of his acting career.
In 2012, Mchunu made his television debut on the popular South African soap opera “Muvhango.” Initially auditioning for a Sotho-speaking character named Mothato Mokhethi, he impressively adapted to the role’s change to Sizwe Shange, showcasing his versatility as an actor.
This breakthrough role opened doors for Mchunu, leading to cameo appearances in shows like “Ingozi” and a guest spot on the sitcom “Skwizas.” He continued to hone his craft and expand his acting repertoire.
Mchunu’s talent and dedication earned him a role in the drama series “Soul City,” further solidifying his presence in the industry. In the third season of “eHostela,” he portrayed the character S’motoza, a member of the Brotherhood involved in criminal activities. In 2019, Mchunu joined the cast of the popular soap opera “Imbewu: The Seed,” where he played the character Nkululeko. His performance on the show garnered attention and contributed to his growing fame.
After several successful seasons on “Imbewu: The Seed,” Mchunu announced his departure at the beginning of 2022 after a salary dispute. He, however, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and the support he received. He then secured a short role in the telenovela “Umkhokha: The Curse,” portraying the character Mlungisi Mthembu/Mzobe. His character’s storyline came to an abrupt end recently. Mchunu is currently acting in the popular television series “Uzalo,” playing the character Wizard.
Beyond acting, he co-manages an acting academy, offering opportunities for aspiring actors from townships to learn and create productions. His prowess isn’t confined to acting alone; he excels as a voice-over artist, having lent his voice to ABSA bank commercials and starred in TV adverts for MTN.
