This is the biography of Asanda Lusaseni Mvana, professionally known as Msaki. She is a South African composer, singer, and songwriter. She has made significant contributions to the music industry with her unique style and powerful vocal abilities.

Early Life

Msaki was born in East London, Eastern Cape, and grew up in a musical environment. Her father, a DJ, and her grandfather, a music composer, played a significant role in shaping her passion for music. She attended Cathcart High School and Nelson Mandela University before later pursuing her studies at Rhodes University, where she obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree.

Career Beginnings

Msaki’s musical journey began in 2008 when she joined The Patience, an alternative rock group based in East London. She also became a member of the electro-experimental band Johnny Cradle, which was based in Cape Town. In 2009, she showcased her talents as a guitarist and lead vocalist in the duo Kate and I, formed in Grahamstown.

In 2012, Msaki further honed her musical skills by attending a music school in North Carolina, USA.

Msaki’s career gained momentum as she established her own record label, One Shushu Day Artistry. In 2013, she released her debut Extended Play (EP) titled “Nal’ithemba,” produced by Cobus Van Dyk. Her talent and unique sound quickly garnered attention, and in 2016, she received the Ovation Award at the 7th Standard Bank Ovation Awards and the Gold Award First Place at Cape Town Fringe.

Her single “Imfama Ziyabona,” released in 2016, achieved great success and debuted on the Metro FM Charts, remaining there for 19 consecutive weeks.

In June 2017, Msaki released her debut album, “Zaneliza: How The Water Moves,” in South Africa. Co-produced by Nduduzo Makhathini, the album showcased her songwriting skills and mesmerizing vocals. She performed at the National Arts Festival to promote the album. “Zaneliza: How The Water Moves” received a nomination for Best Adult Contemporary Album at the 23rd South African Music Awards.

Msaki’s collaboration with South African DJ Prince Kaybee on the song “Fetch Your Life,” released in 2019, became a massive hit and reached number one on the iTunes Dance charts. She continued to make waves in the industry, collaborating with artists like TRESOR, Kid X, Kabza De Small, Focalistic, and Kelly Khumalo.

In 2021, Msaki released her double project, “Platinumb Heart,” which showcased her growth as an artist. She headlined the 14th Annual Mzansi Fela Festival in December, sharing the stage with notable artists such as Amanda Black, Zoë Modiga, and Mandisi Dyantyisa.

Msaki’s influence extended beyond her music career, as she made a screen debut as a guest judge on Idols South Africa season 17 in 2021.


Msaki’s discography includes several notable projects, including her studio albums:

Msaki Personal Life

Msaki is married and has three children. Although the singer doesn’t frequently mention her husband, they first met during her time at the university.

Cheating Scandal

In 2022, Msaki made headlines after she was alleged to be having an affair with media personality Smash Afrika.

It was reported that radio personality Smash Afrika admitted to cheating on his wife, Kefiloe Chuene, with Msaki.

According to a source, Smash Afrika’s wife reportedly discovered pictures of them kissing and a love letter from Msaki.

Taking to Twitter to respond to the allegations, Msaki did not confirm nor deny the cheating allegations.
