This is the biography of Lindokuhle Mgedeza, professionally known as Mlindo the Vocalist. He is a prominent South African singer and songwriter celebrated for his soulful vocals and poignant songwriting. He gained widespread recognition for his debut single, “Amablesser.”

Early Life

Mlindo the Vocalist was born in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal. His musical journey began at the age of four when he discovered his passion for singing while participating in his local church choir. He pursued his education at Phathwa High School in Gcilima, Margate.

Mlindo the Vocalist Career

Mlindo the Vocalist musical career took off   when he joined the hip-hop group Flow Riders in 2010, where he showcased his vocal prowess.

Later, in 2014, he formed an a cappella group called White Bread after parting ways with Flow Riders. White Bread achieved success, winning several accolades, including the prestigious Search for the Stars competition held at uShaka Marine World in Durban.

In 2017, Mlindo the Vocalist won the talent competition Golden Search in Richards Bay, which provided him with an opportunity to collaborate with Afrotainment, a record label owned by producer DJ Tira. During this time, Mlindo gained attention on social media platforms by uploading videos of himself covering popular songs. One of his notable viral videos featured a stripped-down version of DJ Maphorisa’s song “Midnight Starring.” Subsequently, DJ Maphorisa discovered Mlindo on Twitter and signed him to his label, BlaqBoy Music, before Mlindo eventually signed with Universal Music Africa.

Rise to Prominence and Debut Album

On February 6, 2018, Mlindo made a significant mark in the music scene by featuring on Sun-El Musician’s track “Bamthathile.” The song quickly soared to success, dominating South African airwaves and claiming the top spot on local charts. Building on this momentum, he unveiled his debut single, “AmaBlesser,” produced by DJ Maphorisa. The track skyrocketed to immense popularity, earning quadruple platinum certification from the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) on May 10, 2019. Mlindo’s newfound fame not only propelled his career but also enabled him to enhance the quality of life for his family, including providing housing for his brother and supporting his unemployed mother.

Following the triumph of “AmaBlesser,” Mlindo unveiled his debut album, “Emakhaya,” on September 21, 2018. The album swiftly achieved platinum status accredited by RiSA and amassed an impressive nearly 45 million streams nationwide by May 2019. The album’s second single, “Macala,” soared to the number one spot in South Africa, further cementing Mlindo’s stature in the music realm. “Emakhaya” not only garnered commercial success but also earned Mlindo three nominations at the 25th edition of the South African Music Awards, including Best Newcomer of the Year, Best Produced Album, and Best Afro Pop Album.

By August 2020, Mlindo was reportedly working on his second studio album. In 2020, he released two singles titled “Yekela,” featuring Masiano and Vusi Nova, followed by the single “Mali” featuring Nathi.

On June 2022, Mlindo announced the upcoming release of his second studio album on his Instagram account. “Lindokuhle” was released on July 22, 2022.

Controversy

In 2022, Mlindo the Vocalist faced a public fallout with DJ Maphorisa. DJ Maphorisa took to Facebook, accusing Mlindo and his manager, Nyiko Bilankulu, of betraying him. The dispute centred around financial matters and allegations of self-promotion. However, Mlindo and DJ Maphorisa later reconciled, with Mlindo announcing that DJ Maphorisa was featured on his new album, “Lindokuhle.”

Personal Life

Mlindo the Vocalist is in a relationship with Taylor-jo Allison. They have been together for nearly a year, and in April 2024, the couple announced that they are expecting a baby.
