Early Life

Born in Zola, Soweto, South Africa, Mdu Masilela spent his formative years on the streets of Soweto, where his love for music was evident. He often played around with his grandmother’s piano. During his school years, he formed several music groups, a precursor to his future in the music industry.

Mdu Masilela Career

Mdu’s musical journey began as a producer for bubblegum artists such as Chicco, Pat Shange, and Yvonne Chaka Chaka. Together with producer Mandla “Spikiri” Mofokeng, he laid the foundation for his career.

In 1988, Mdu Masilela and fellow artist Mandla ‘Spikiri’ Mofokeng formed the music group M-M Deluxe. They released the album “Where Were You?” under Cool Spot Productions. Two years later, in 1990, Mdu gained recognition with his debut album, “LA Beat,” making a significant impact in South Africa’s house music scene.

Mdu embraced the emergence of kwaito, adopting the artist name “M’Du” as an abbreviation of his name. He earned the nickname “The Godfather Of Kwaito” for his pioneering contributions to the genre, competing with top Kwaito producer Arthur Mafokate.

In subsequent years, Mdu Masilela established his own record label, “M’Du Records,” under Sony’s South African subsidiary management. He produced and nurtured various artists and brands, including Mashamplani, Sharon Dee, Mawillies, Ma Kap-Kap, and Chillies. Simultaneously, he pursued his solo career and engaged in side projects, such as the LM Jam (Let M’Du Jam) kwaito jazz endeavours. He showcased his versatility as a composer, bassist, and keyboardist.

Mdu’s contributions to the music industry were recognized with several awards, including the South African Music Award for Best Kwaito Album in 2001. In 2015, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement award at the South Africa Music Awards.

Personal Life

Mdu Masilela’s personal life saw him in a relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Sarah Masilela, which eventually culminated in marriage. The couple is blessed with three children. Additionally, Mdu has one child with Sibahle Dlamini from a separate relationship.

Mdu Masilela Controversy

Despite his musical success, Mdu Masilela’s personal life has not been without controversy. He has faced allegations of infidelity within his marriage. In a reported incident in December 2017, he was embroiled in a polygamous battle with his wife, Sarah M, after allegedly paying lobola for his baby mama, Sibahle Dlamini, without Sarah’s consent.

Sarah expressed her opposition to the marriage and declared herself as Mdu’s only wife. She accused Sibahle of attempting to disrupt her marriage and voiced her determination to protect her family.

Mdu Masilela addressed the rumours, confirming his commitment to Sarah and their children. He acknowledged his past infidelity and expressed his dedication to rebuilding trust within their relationship.

Abuse Allegations

Furthermore, Mdu faced abuse allegations, including incidents involving his wife Sarah and his baby’s mama, Sibahle, in 2017. However, Sarah publicly supported her husband and refuted the accusations.
