Biography: Mbuyiseni Ndlozi is a South African politician, activist, and academic. He is a member of the National Assembly of South Africa and the commissar of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), a left-wing party that advocates for social justice and economic transformation.

 

Early Life and Education

Ndlozi was born on 9 May 1985 in Evaton, Gauteng. He grew up in a single-parent household and became politically conscious at a young age when his uncle was jailed by the apartheid regime for his involvement in the liberation struggle. Ndlozi joined various youth movements and political organizations, such as the South African Students Congress (SASCO), the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL), and the Young Communist League (YCL). He also participated in international solidarity campaigns for Palestine and Cuba.

Ndlozi studied at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2008, a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in 2009, a Master of Arts degree in 2012, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2017. His PhD thesis focused on the political sociology of the EFF and its role in South African politics.

Ndlozi joined the EFF in 2013, shortly after its formation by former ANCYL leader Julius Malema. He became the first official spokesperson of the party and one of its most prominent members. Ndlozi was elected to the National Assembly in 2014, representing the Mpumalanga constituency. He also served on the Portfolio Committees of Telecommunications and Communications.

As a parliamentarian, Ndlozi was known for his eloquence, charisma, and radicalism. He often clashed with the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and its allies, as well as the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA). He was also involved in several controversies and protests, such as the disruption of President Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation Address in 2015 and 2016, and the occupation of the public broadcaster SABC in 2016.

 

In 2020, Ndlozi resigned as the EFF spokesperson and was replaced by Vuyani Pambo. He was appointed its head of political education. Currently, he is the party’s commissar.

Ndlozi is married to Mmabatho Montsho, a South African actress, filmmaker, and writer. They have been together since 2013 and tied the knot in 2019. Ndlozi is also a singer and songwriter, and has released several songs, such as Azania and Umama. He is an avid fan of football and supports the Orlando Pirates.
