Despite the demands of his football career, Luke maintained close relationships with his family, including his older brother Joshua and his sister Sydni. His personal relationships extended beyond his immediate family. He had a girlfriend, Lailaa Craayenstein, with whom he shared plans and dreams for the future. Her heartfelt words after his tragic passing reflect the depth of their bond and the shared vision they held for their life together.

The details surrounding Luke Fleurs’ untimely death are both tragic and shocking. On the night of April 3, 2024, Luke was at a petrol station in Florida, a suburb of Johannesburg, when he became the victim of a hijacking1. Reports indicate that he was not alone during this incident.

As Luke waited to be served by the petrol attendant, he was approached by two armed individuals driving a white BMW 1 Series. They pointed a firearm at him, forcing him to exit his vehicle, a red VW Golf 8 GTI. In a desperate attempt to recover his car, Luke was shot once in the upper body. The assailants then fled the scene in his vehicle, followed by their accomplice in the BMW.

Despite being rushed to the hospital, Luke succumbed to his injuries. The news of his death was confirmed by his club, Kaizer Chiefs, and has since sent ripples of grief throughout the football community and beyond. The police investigation into the hijacking and shooting is ongoing as of April 2024.
