This is the biography of Lorna Maseko, she is a multi-talented South African celebrity chef, media personality, executive producer, MC, and former ballet dancer. Widely recognized as South Africa’s culinary princess, Lorna Maseko has gained recognition as one of the country’s most prominent public figures.


She was born on the 3rd of July 1983. As of 2024, she is 41 years old.

Early Life

Lorna Maseko was born and raised in the Johannesburg township of Alexandra. Her parents, her mother a receptionist and her father a taxi driver, instilled in her a strong work ethic and determination. She has an older brother and two younger sisters. At the age of nine, Maseko began her journey in ballet under the tutelage of Martin Schonberg, following the Cecchetti method. She later pursued a Bachelor of Communications at the University of South Africa and completed a year-long culinary course.

Lorna Maseko Career

Dance played a central role in Maseko’s life until her mid-20s. She embarked on international tours from a young age and competed in the prestigious Prix de Lausanne. In 2005, Maseko achieved a significant milestone when she became the first black ballerina to be crowned in South Africa. Two years later, she portrayed the character of Kitri in the Pretoria production of Don Quixote. After an 18-month hiatus from the South African Ballet Theatre, Maseko returned to the stage in 2009, captivating audiences with her performance in the titular role of Carmen.

Maseko’s career expanded into television, where she worked as a presenter and producer for shows such as Afro Showbiz News and The Weekender on SABC. She gained national recognition as a finalist on the 2006 season of Top Billing, and later returned to the show as a presenter in 2010. In 2007, she was honored as the November Woman In Action by True Love Magazine.

Her television appearances continued to diversify as Maseko served as a judge on the South African version of So You Think You Can Dance in 2013 and participated as a contestant on the series I Love South Africa in 2014. She also made an appearance on season 2 of the music talk show Zaziwa.

Culinary Passion

In 2015, Maseko showcased her culinary skills by competing in the Celebrity edition of MasterChef South Africa. Through this experience, she discovered her passion for cooking. She went on to host the 2016 cooking reality series Top Chef SA and subsequently landed her own series, The Hostess with Lorna Maseko, on SABC3 the following year. Maseko even ventured into the restaurant business, opening The Bread Basket in Morningside Shopping Centre, although she no longer owns it. In 2018, she started sharing cooking videos on her YouTube channel, “Lorna With A Pinch Of Salt.”

Maseko’s culinary talents gained international recognition in 2019. She graced the cover of Women’s Health magazine and hosted the prestigious World Restaurant Awards in Paris. Additionally, she was invited as a guest speaker at TEDxKedgeBS, held at KEDGE Business School’s Marseille campus. Her contributions extended to the global fight against hunger as she participated in the EAT Forum in Stockholm, a non-profit organization dedicated to combating world hunger. Maseko also made appearances at Taste of London and Taste of Dubai. In September 2019, she published her first cookbook, Celebrate with Lorna Maseko, which went on to win awards for best celebrity chef cookbook and best international cookbook at the 2020 Gourmand Awards. She was appointed as an ambassador for the beauty brand Justine.

Personal Life

Lorna Maseko was once married to Gcina “GC” Lukhele, a sales executive. They got married in December 2010 at the Memoire in Muldersdrift. However, they later divorced in 2016.

During the 2016 YOU Spectacular Awards, while making a stage appearance to present an award to rapper Emtee, Maseko revealed that she was a newly divorced woman and jokingly expressed her readiness to enter a relationship with the award show’s host, Ann Hirsch.

Dating Rumors

Since 2019, rumors have circulated about a romantic relationship between Lorna Maseko and Floyd Shivambu, an EFF politician. The rumors gained traction when they were spotted together in Melrose Arch. Speculation about Shivambu’s divorce from his wife, Siphesihle Pezi, further fueled the rumors. In 2020, a Sunday newspaper report claimed that Maseko was pregnant with Shivambu’s baby. Maseko vehemently denied the pregnancy rumors, emphasizing that it was untrue and expressed her disappointment at the creation of such fabricated stories. She also highlighted the importance of respecting women’s personal journeys and struggles, citing issues such as fibroids and endometriosis.
