This is the biography of Lorcia Cooper, she is an award-winning South African actress, dancer, dance teacher, choreographer, and presenter. She is best known for her role as Charmaine in the soapie Backstage and Erin on Scandal!.

Early Life

Lorcia Cooper was born in Cape Town, South Africa. Not much is known about her education and qualifications. From a young age, Lorcia displayed a passion for dancing, which led her parents to enrol her in dance classes. At the age of four, she began competing in Latin American and Ballroom dancing competitions. By the age of five, Lorcia had already won her first competition in the provincial championships for both Ballroom and Latin American dances.

Lorcia’s talent and dedication to dance led her to the Academy of Dance at the age of eight, where she studied under renowned choreographer Debby Turner, who became her mentor and guide. She later joined the North West Arts Council’s Dance Academy, where she eventually became a teacher. Her career as a dancer took off when she won the FNB Vita Best Female Dancer Award at the age of 19. This achievement propelled her into performing in various theater and corporate shows around the world, including Europe and the USA.

Lorcia’s breakthrough in the television industry came with her role as Charmaine on the hit ETV show ‘Backstage’. In addition to acting, she also showcased her choreography skills on the show. Lorcia later joined the SABC2 channel, where she became a presenter for Travel Xplorer. She expanded her acting career by playing the lead role of ‘Cindi’ in the film Hey Boy, directed by Andre Odendaal and aired in 2003.

Throughout her career, Lorcia has taken on various roles in both television and film. She served as a judge on the dancing competition Dans! Dans! Dans! which aired on ykNET in 2008. In the same year, she became the choreographer and judge for the reality competition High School Musical: Spotlight South Africa, aired on M-Net.

In 2017, Lorcia portrayed the character ‘Tyson’ in the Mzansi Magic show Lockdown during its fourth season. She also played the supporting role of ‘Marang’ in the film Zulu Wedding. Her exceptional acting skills were recognized at the SAFTA Awards in March 2019 when she won the Best Supporting Actress Award for her role in Lockdown 2.

Lorcia’s talent continued to shine as she took on the role of Erin in the popular television series Scandal!. In September 2020, she appeared in the Mzansi drama series Housekeepers, portraying the role of ‘Mkhonto’. In 2024, Lorcia portrayed the character of Mimmie Cooper in the local TV drama “Nikiwe”. She also secured a role in Showmax’s “Red Ink“, where she plays the character of Detective Morapedi.

Apart from her successful acting career, Lorcia is passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of young people. She initiated the program ‘Life Skills through Dance’, partnering with brands such as McDonald’s, Easy Waves, and Shield. The program has reached over 3000 young individuals, teaching them valuable life skills through the medium of dance and empowering their futures.
