This is the biography of Kope “Tswyza” Makgae, a South African artist known for his diverse talents as an actor, comedian, poet, businessman, and rapper. He is best known as Mrekza in Generations: The Legacy.

 

Early Life

Kope Makgae was born on November 7, 1985, in Lebowakgomo, Polokwane, in the Limpopo province. He grew up in the Mapedi community of Lebowakgomo in the southeast of Polokwane. Music was a significant part of his family life, and from a young age, he was encouraged by his elders to be confident, a trait that is evident in his artistic persona today.

Kope attended primary and secondary school in Lebowakgomo. He obtained his high school education and matriculated from Capricorn High School. Later, he enrolled in media studies at the University of Limpopo and graduated with a BA in media and communications after several years of study.

Tswyza developed an interest in music while still in high school, earning him the nickname Tswyza from his friends due to his unique rapping style.

Before breaking into the entertainment industry, he hustled in various ways. He sold kota sandwiches to his high-school friends and later supplied pens and pencils to schools across Limpopo. Tswyza would also venture into catering and even started making curtains for nursing homes.

Kope Makgae’s acting journey began with a cameo role as an electrician in the SABC 1 drama series Zone 14. He gained recognition through television commercials, most notably for OLX and DStv.

In 2013, he played a recurring role as Thapelo, Papa G’s henchman, in the SABC3 soapie Isidingo. His first significant television role was as Gunsten ‘Gus’ Moloi in the Mzansi Magic telenovela inKaba. He also starred in the feature film Thina Sobabili as Mr Finance and played Mpumi in the e.tv anthology series Mzansi Love.

Tswyza joined the famous South African soap opera Generations: The Legacy in 2016. His portrayal of Mrekza, a dynamic and memorable character, captivated audiences with his wit, humour, and street-smart persona. He became a household name through this iconic role.

In 2024, Tswyza moved to a new television drama series called Isiphetho: The Destiny. He portrayed the character Mosa, a role that promises to showcase his versatility as an actor. Isiphetho: The Destiny follows the intertwined lives of four friends who share a life-changing secret from their teenage years. These friends open a restaurant in their community, but their past rivals threaten to thwart their dreams. Kope Makgae stars alongside acclaimed actress Linda Sokhulu, former “The Wife” star Mbalenhle Mavimbela, and the iconic Thulani Mtsweni in this family-oriented drama series set in the vibrant community of Mzimhlope.

Tswyza is technically but not officially married. He lives with his fiancée, Mpotseng, and they have three children, including twins: Zoey (a girl) and Zoyl (a boy).

The birth of the twins inspired him to consider settling down and making Mpotseng his wife. Kope’s social life thrived on a free-spirited mentality, but the twins changed his perspective, leading him to embrace a more committed relationship.
