This is the biography of Khaya Mthethwa, he is a renowned South African singer-songwriter, musician, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. He gained widespread recognition after winning the 8th season of the popular TV singing competition, Idols South Africa.

Early Life

Khaya Mthethwa was born and raised in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal. Growing up in a church environment, he was deeply influenced by music from a young age. His father, Bhekithemba Mthethwa, is a minister at the Umlazi Oasis Fellowship Centre.

Despite his passion for music, Khaya’s parents initially had reservations about his career choice. Consequently, he pursued project management studies at Varsity College while remaining actively involved in the church as the music director of the church choir. Khaya’s strong upbringing and the guidance of his religious parents, pastors Themba and Lulu Mthethwa, played a significant role in shaping his musical aspirations.

Khaya Mthethwa Career

Khaya Mthethwa discovered his singing talent while in high school. He first gained attention as a backing vocalist, singing tenor for Mthunzi Namba’s Mercy album, a co-founder of Joyous Celebration. Following his impressive vocal abilities, he was invited to join Joyous Celebration just two days before the live recording of Joyous Celebration 15 in 2010.

In 2012, Khaya made another appearance as a backing vocalist on Ntokozo Mbambo’s Filled album. That same year, he decided to participate in Idols South Africa, seeking to explore different genres and enhance his musical skills. His exceptional talent led him to win the competition with over 80% of the public votes. In 2013, Khaya participated in another TV competition, The Clash of the Choirs, as part of the Kwa-Zulu Natal choir, which emerged as the winning group. Known for his versatility, Khaya excels in various genres, including gospel, pop, jazz, and R&B. He is a self-taught musician proficient in playing the keyboard, guitar, drums, and percussion. Furthermore, he is a skilled songwriter and has penned most of the songs in his debut album, For You.

Apart from his singing career, Khaya Mthethwa is also recognized as the host of the Gospel Alive TV show, a gospel-focused program that premiered on 3 November 2013 on Multichoice DSTV’s Mzansi Magic channel. He collaborated with content producer Tebogo Rameetse on this project. In 2015, Khaya was ordained as a pastor. He released a live DVD recording titled The Uprising in 2014, followed by The Dawn in 2016, and Mkhulumsebenzi in 2018.

Khaya Mthethwa has also ventured into hosting various TV shows, including Gospel Alive on Mzansi Magic, Rhythm and Gospel on BET, and Gospel Avenue on SABC1.

Khaya Mthethwa Personal Life

Khaya Mthethwa was previously married to Ntandoyenkosi Kunene, who held the title of Miss South Africa 2016. The couple tied the knot in December 2017 in a traditional wedding ceremony held in Mpumalanga. Surprisingly, they had only dated for three months before getting married.

Their marriage lasted two years before they announced their divorce in December 2019, citing undisclosed challenges. They were blessed with a son during the duration of their short-lived marriage.
