Kelly Nonhlanhla Khumalo is a multi-talented artist from South Africa, born on November 11, 1982. Hailing from Nquthu, KwaZulu-Natal, Khumalo was discovered while performing at a gospel talent search. She signed a record deal with Bonsai Entertainment, and released her first studio album, T.K.O in 2005. Khumalo’s debut album was a huge success, propelling her to fame and earning her the title of Best Newcomer of 2005 in the Afro Pop music circuit.

In 2012, Khumalo released The Past, The Present, The Future album, followed by an award-winning performance at the 19th South African Music Awards in May 2013. Khumalo’s ninth album, The Voice of Africa, was released in 2020, showcasing her versatility as an artist by incorporating R&B, gospel, and Afro pop. The album was certified gold in South Africa, cementing Khumalo’s place as one of the country’s most talented artists.

Career Overview

Kelly Khumalo was born in Katlehong and moved to KwaZulu-Natal at a young age. She later relocated to Gauteng in 1997. Khumalo was discovered while performing at a gospel talent search and signed a record deal with Bonsai Entertainment, releasing her debut studio album T.K.O in 2005. This album quickly garnered attention and earned Khumalo two nominations at the 2006 South African Music Awards.

Khumalo continued to release music over the years, with her second studio album Itshitshi being released in 2006. In 2012, she released The Past, The Present, The Future album, which won her the Best Female Artist of the Year award at the 2013 South African Music Awards. Khumalo’s seventh studio album My Truth was released in 2016, earning her the Best Female Album at the 2017 Metro FM Awards.

In 2018, Khumalo released her eighth studio album Unleashed, which was produced by Mondli Ngcobo. In 2020, she released her ninth studio album The Voice of Africa, which incorporated elements of R&B, gospel, and Afro pop. The album was certified gold in South Africa, with its lead single “Empini” being certified gold as well. At the 6th ceremony of All Africa Music Awards, Khumalo’s single “Empini” received a nomination for Best Female Artist in South Africa.

Personal Life: Controversy, Baby Daddies

The Tragic Death of Senzo Meyiwa: On 26 October 2014, Khumalo’s boyfriend, Senzo Meyiwa, who was the captain of the South Africa men’s national football team and club side Orlando Pirates, was shot dead in her presence at her family’s home in Vosloorus. Although the killer is allegedly known to Khumalo and everyone present at the shooting, she has remained silent on who the killer is. In October 2020, five men were charged with murdering Meyiwa, but they denied involvement in the killing.

Drugs: Khumalo has been vocal about her past experiences with domestic violence. In 2012, she became an advocate against domestic violence, using her platform to speak out about her own abusive relationship. She also admitted to being a drug addict for at least two years during her relationship with singer Molemo Maarohanye and attended Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

Baby Daddies: Khumalo has two baby daddies, rapper and television presenter Jub Jub and the late Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa. Currently, Kelly Khumalo is allegedly dating former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mthokozisi Vincent Yende, who is speculated to be the father of her expected third child.
