Judith Sephuma is a celebrated South African jazz and Afro-pop vocalist, renowned for her powerful vocal performances and unique musical style. Over the course of her two-decade career, Sephuma has released numerous critically acclaimed albums and established herself as one of the country’s premier recording artists.

Early Life and Education

Judith Sephuma was born on June 29, 1974 in Seshego, Limpopo Province, South Africa. She was raised in the city of Polokwane, also in Limpopo. In 1994, Sephuma moved to Cape Town to pursue her studies in jazz vocals.

From a young age, Sephuma knew she wanted a career in music. After completing her secondary education at Khagiso High School, she attended the FUBA Academy music school in Johannesburg in 1993, where she obtained her Grade 5 Music Diploma. The following year, in 1994, Sephuma reached the finals of two major talent competitions – the Shell Road to Fame and SABC1’s Jam Alley Search for Talent.

That same year, Sephuma enrolled at the University of Cape Town, where she studied for a Performer’s Diploma in Jazz, graduating in 1997. She continued her musical education, earning an Honours Degree in Jazz Performance in 1999, with a major in Jazz Singing under the tutelage of Professor Mike Campbell. Alongside her jazz studies, Sephuma also received five years of classical vocal training from Virginia Davids.

Musical Career

During her time in Cape Town, Sephuma performed extensively with various bands and solo artists. In 1999, she won the “Best Jazz Vocalist” award at the Old Mutual Jazz Into The Future competition, which led to her signing with the African division of BMG Records.

Sephuma’s breakthrough came in 2000 at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Cape Town, where she formed her own backing band and performed under her own name. This paved the way for the release of her critically acclaimed debut album, “A Cry, A Smile, A Dance“, in 2001. She followed this up with “New Beginnings” in 2005 and went on to release several more albums, including “Change is Here” (2008), “I Am A Living Testimony” (2011), “A Legacy Live in Concert” (2012), and her first gospel album, “The Experience LIVE in Concert” (2013).

In 2015, Sephuma released her “One Word” album, which she described as Afro-Funk Jazz. Her most recent studio album, “Power of Dreams”, was launched in 2019 after a two-year period of creative rediscovery. This album has been hailed as a powerful expression of Sephuma’s artistry.

Throughout her career, Judith Sephuma has been recorded and marketed through her independent record label, Lalomba Music.

Strictly Come Dancing

In 2008, Judith Sephuma was one of the celebrity contestants on the fifth season of the SABC2 reality dance competition, Strictly Come Dancing. She was paired with professional dancer Eksteen Traut, and they were the second couple to be eliminated from the show.

Clash of the Choirs

In 2012, Sephuma was announced as one of the seven choirmasters for the Mzansi Magic reality competition Clash of the Choirs South Africa, which aired the following year. She served as a mentor for the choirs representing her home province of Limpopo.

Personal Life

Judith was previously married to Selaelo Selota whom she divorced in 2010 and then married Siphiwe Mhlambi, whom she divorced in 2017. In 2024 she was alleged to be in a relationship with her fitness trainer. According to Zimoja, Judith Sephuma has found love again in the arms of her trainer and younger fitness model Sibusiso Mazibuko.
