This is the biography of Joyce Skefu, she is a prominent Motswana-South African actress, evangelist and voice artist. She is renowned for her versatile roles in Muvhango, Scandal!, and Abomama.

Early Life

Joyce Skefu was born in Botswana. She later moved to Soweto, Gauteng, and spent her formative years in Bloemfontein with her grandparents in Lesotho. Despite her parents’ initial disapproval of her pursuing a career in acting, Skefu followed her passion and enrolled in drama studies, even though her parents wanted her to study teaching. She graduated with a higher Diploma in Beauty Therapy from the University of St. Thomasin Texas, Houston.

Joy Skefu Career

Skefu’s television career took off in 1997 when she made her debut in the popular soap opera Muvhango. She portrayed the character of Doris Mokoena, which gained her immense popularity and critical acclaim. Her exceptional performance earned her five nominations for Best Actress, of which she won two. She also received the prestigious Duku Duku Award, which was voted by the public. Her catchphrase, “You must never . . .,” became a fan favourite and solidified her status as a crowd-puller on SABC2.

In 1998, Skefu ventured into the film industry with the Direct-to-video film Voete van Goud, where she played the role of Maphiri. She continued to make appearances in various television productions, including the well-known AIDS drama series Phamokate.

In 2015, Skefu joined the cast of the popular soap opera Scandal! and portrayed the character Maletsatsi Khumalo for over 12 consecutive years. Her remarkable portrayal captivated audiences and further cemented her reputation as a talented actress. In 2018, she showcased her skills in the Mzansi Magic drama series Abomama, playing the role of Fumane. The success of the series led to her reprising her role in the second season. Additionally, she appeared in the second season of the Mzansi Magic drama series Imposter as Valeta. Skefu’s talent was recognized internationally when she won the Best Actress in Theatre award at the White House Theatre in London.

In 2020, she joined the cast of the SABC2 telenovela Lithapo, where she portrayed the character Moipone.

Personal Life

Joyce Skefu was previously married, but her husband passed away after a few years of marriage. She is a loving mother to two children.


Throughout her life, Skefu has faced several health challenges. She was involved in two car accidents, one in 2010 and another in 2014, but fortunately, she survived both incidents with minor injuries.

In 2022, Joyce Skefu experienced a mild stroke, which led to her hospitalization. She shared her journey on Instagram, posting a photo of herself lying in a hospital bed. Skefu expressed gratitude for the support she received from her followers and credited their love and encouragement as a source of strength during her recovery. After undergoing treatment and therapy, she made a successful recovery.
