This is the biography of Jomo Sibiya, a South African politician who currently serves as President Cyril Ramaphosa’s special advisor. He has previously served as a Member of Parliament and an MEC.


Jomo Sibiya Early Life and Education

Ntuthuko Mbongiseni Sibiya, known as Jomo Sibiya, was born in Silutshana, Nquthu, in South Africa’s former Natal Province. He completed his matriculation at Ekucabangeni High School and attained a political science degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Sibiya’s political involvement began during his time at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he served as the chairperson of the ANC Youth League’s branch at the Westville campus. After university, he was elected secretary of the ANC’s Ward 24 branch in eThekwini and later became its chairperson. He also served as chairperson of the ANC Youth League in eThekwini between 2011 and 2013 and was a member of the ANC’s Regional Executive Committee and Regional Working Committee.

In 2014, Sibiya was elected to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature via the ANC’s provincial electoral list and served on multiple committees, including the Human Settlements Portfolio Committee. He was elected to the ANC’s provincial executive committee in 2018 and, following the 2019 general elections became the chairperson of the Education Portfolio Committee.

In March 2021, Sibiya was appointed a Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlements and Public Works in KwaZulu-Natal, succeeding Peggy Nkonyeni. His term lasted until August 2022.


Recent Developments

In July 2022, Sibiya was nominated to contest the position of provincial treasurer at the ANC’s provincial elective conference. He accepted the nomination and competed for the position. As of 2024, Jomo Sibiya was serving as a special advisor to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
