This is the biography of Hlomla Dandala, he is a renowned multi-talented South African actor, presenter, producer, and director. He has made significant contributions to the entertainment industry and has gained recognition for his versatile skills and captivating performances.

Early Life

Hlomla Dandala was born on September 22, 1974, in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, South Africa. He attended Sacred Heart College in Johannesburg for his education. Even during his school years, Hlomla showed a strong inclination towards a career behind the camera despite his initial interest in Mathematics and Science. He later pursued his passion for drama by majoring in Drama at Wits University.

Hlomla Dandala Career

Hlomla Dandala’s career in the entertainment industry began to flourish in 1995 when he participated in the reality show called Channel 0. In 1998, he made his television debut on the popular series Isidingo, where he portrayed the character of mine manager Derek Nyathi for three years. His portrayal of Derek Nyathi gained national attention when he and his on-screen partner, Phillipa de Villiers (played by Bianca Amato), shared South Africa’s first interracial TV kiss and went on to marry.

Diverse Roles

Over the years, Hlomla has showcased his talent in various television shows, films, and theatre productions. He hosted the reality show All You Need Is Love in 2002 and played the role of Majola Tindleni in the drama series Zero Tolerance in 2004. Hlomla has also directed episodes of popular South African series such as Hard Copy, Gaz’lam, Generations, Backstage, Scandal!, and Isidingo.

In 2006, Hlomla directed the film The Bet as part of the Heartlines movie series on SABC2. He has appeared in notable films, including Fools, Red Dust, Lord Of War, Sniper: Reloaded, Winnie, Happiness Is a Four-letter Word, and Indemnity. He also had roles in the made-for-TV movie Coup! (2006) and the miniseries The Triangle (2005).

One of Hlomla’s significant television roles was in the South African-Canadian medical drama series Jozi-H (2007), where he portrayed consulting trauma surgeon Dr. Zane Jara. He played the lead role of Khanyiso Phalo in the SABC2 mini-series Land of Thirst (2008), and he captivated audiences as Jacob Makhubu in the drama series Jacob’s Cross, which aired from 2007 to 2015 on M-Net Series, M-Net, SABC2, and Mzansi Wethu.

In 2013, Hlomla starred as Jet Hlatswayo, Minister of the Environment, in the SABC1 political thriller mystery drama series End Game. He also appeared as Gomorrah in the third season of the drama series Rockville (2015) and portrayed human rights lawyer Kingsley Siseko Langa in the soapie Scandal! (2016).

International Recognition

Hlomla gained international recognition when he played the role of Govan Mbeki, a politician and Umkhonto we Sizwe Secretary, in the American/South African co-production Madiba (2017). The series aired on BET and Discovery Channel. Hlomla joined the 1Magic soapie The River in 2018 as Zweli, the husband of the lead character Lindiwe (played by Sindi Dlathu), and he appeared in the show for five seasons.

In 2022, Hlomla headlined the Netflix thriller miniseries Justice Served, portraying the character Azania Maqoma, a freedom fighter and military veteran with a secret agenda of settling scores with past enemies while conveying the impression that he was striving for justice. In 2023, he played Victor Hlale, a potential boyfriend to the lead character Thando Mokoena (played by Katlego Lebogang), in the Netflix romantic comedy Yoh! Christmas.

In April 2024, he assumed the role of Caesar in Season 2 of the soapie “Smoke and Mirrors. This marked his entry into the cast, taking over the character previously portrayed by Zolisa Xaluva in Season 1.

Personal Life

Hlomla Dandala was previously married to TV presenter Candy Litchfield, but they eventually divorced. He is alleged to have fathered other children outside of marriage. After his divorce from Candy Litchfield, Hlomla got married again to his current wife, Brenda Dandala, who is also a TV presenter.


Dandala is a father to five children. Only three of them, Ziyanda Dandala, Sam Dandala, and Tao Dandala, are well known.
