Early Life

Harriet Manamela was born in Diepkloof, South Africa. She completed her secondary education at St. Anthony’s Centre in Boksburg. From a young age, Manamela harboured a deep passion for acting and was determined to pursue a career in the performing arts. Inspired by her childhood dream, she embarked on a journey to fulfil her aspirations in the world of acting.

Harriet Manamela’s acting career began when she joined the Squints Artists Community Theatre Group in Alexandra. She performed in productions such as “The Virus” and “Let’s Talk About Aids” at The Market Theatre Laboratory Annual Festival. She also trained at The Market Theatre Laboratory drama school and appeared in various plays, including “Broken Dreams,” “Ways of Dying,” and “Bozoli.” Manamela’s television career started in 1998 with appearances in popular series such as “Soul City,” “Isidingo,” “Yizo Yizo II,” “Justice For All II & III,” and “Zero Tolerance.” She also acted in films including “Dr Lucille,” “Hijack Stories,” “Country of My Skull,” and “Yesterday.” In 2013, she joined the e.tv soapie “Rhythm City” in the role of Nomzamo, Suffocate’s alcoholic mother. Manamela received critical acclaim for her performances and won a SAFTA for Best Supporting Actress in 2012 for her role in the film “Life Above All.” She was also nominated for a Vita award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the SABC3 soapie “Isidingo.”

Manamela has appeared in various other television series, including “Intersexions,” “Sokhulu & Partners,” “The Lab,” “The Wild,” “Tjovitjo,” and “Zone 14.”

Manamela became widely known for her role as Meikie Maputla in the SABC1 drama series “Skeem Saam,” which she debuted in on her 40th birthday, October 13, 2011. She continued to portray the character until her illness in Season 12, with her last appearance on April 5, 2024. During her illness, she was temporarily replaced by Florence Masebe.
