Gontse Ntshegang  is a renowned South African actress, writer, voice-over artist and facilitator. She is best known for her role as Sergeant Rathebe in the popular TV series “Skeem Saam.”

Early Life

Gontse Ntshegang was born on July 1, 1983, in Rustenburg, South Africa. Initially aspiring to become a pharmacist, Gontse shifted her focus to the arts and enrolled at the National School of the Arts as a fine arts student, incorporating drama into her studies.

She later pursued full-time drama at Wits University, which she left in her second year to study physical theatre, set design, and film studies. Gontse is multilingual, speaking English, Tswana, Zulu, and Sotho.

Career

Gontse Ntshegang’s acting career began with her notable role as Keketso Khoza in the e.tv soapie “Scandal!” from 2008 to 2010. Her portrayal of the street-smart and sharp-witted manager of RTs, Johannesburg, garnered significant attention.

In 2011, she played the role of Elizabeth in “Rhythm City,” where her character supported Naomi’s (Moshidi Motshegwa) comeback by pretending Elizabeth’s baby was Naomi’s.

Gontse’s main credits include a role in the stage production “Lion and the Jewel,” where she performed alongside “Scandal!” cast members Nthati Moshesh and Sello Maake Ka-Ncube. She also appeared in the opening sequence for the DStv music station Channel O and had small roles in the drama series “Yizo Yizo” and “Hillside.”

Key Roles and Appearances

In 2012, Gontse was cast as Mapule Modise in the SABC2 soapie “Muvhango,” replacing Matshepo Maleme. She made her first appearance on August 16, 2012. That same year, she guest-starred in an episode of the international action series “Strike Back.”

Gontse narrated the e.tv reality series “Mahadi-Lobola,” which began on eKasi+ in 2015 and was later acquired by e.tv. The series explores the complex lobola negotiations in different South African cultures.

Return to Theatre

After a five-year hiatus from theatre, Gontse returned in 2022, playing Christine in “The Parrot Woman.” The play tells the story of a woman transferred to a concentration camp, held captive in a cage, and guarded by a British soldier.

Recent Work

In 2022, Gontse appeared in the Netflix series “The Brave Ones,” which premiered on September 16, 2022. She starred alongside Sthandile Nkosi, Nomalanga Nkosi, Bonko Khoza, Keke Mphuthi, and Tony Kgoroge. The series follows an almighty goddess reincarnated as a young woman who must harness her divine powers to avenge her sister’s death and protect her family.

Currently, Gontse stars in “Skeem Saam” as Sergeant Rathebe.
