This is the biography of Florence Masebe, a South African actress and television presenter who has starred in various soap operas, dramas, and films. She is also a film producer, a women’s rights activist, and an author. She has won several awards for her acting and producing work, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

 

Early Life and Education

Florence Masebe was born on 14 November 1972 in Limpopo, South Africa. She was trained at UCT Drama School and became a professional actress in 1993.

Florence started her career in kids’ programs and comedy roles. Her big break came in the form of a kids’ program called Electric Workshop with Urban Brew. She followed up her breakthrough as a member of the original cast of Generations, a popular soap opera on SABC. Florence also co-hosted Fokus with Freek Robinson and presented continuity for SABC.

The actress is famous for her role as Humbulani in the SABC2 soapie Muvhango, which she played from 2004 to 2009. Florence joined the cast of the SABC2 soapie 7de Laan in 2009, playing the role of Refiloe Morapedi, Alice’s mother. She also starred as Sis Noni in the 11th season of SABC1’s AIDS drama series Soul City in 2011.

In 2012, she joined the e.tv soapie Scandal! in the role of Precious Thito, a journalist who uncovers corruption and scandals. She also played the lead role of Elelwani in the first Venda-language feature film of the same name, which was released in 2012. Florence won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 9th Africa Movie Academy Awards for her performance in Elelwani.

She is also a film producer and has produced several documentaries and short films, such as The Forgotten Kingdom, The River, and The Republic. In 2024, she joined Skeem Saam temporarily as Meikie Maputla.

Florence is married and has two children, a son and a daughter. She is an advocate for women’s rights and social justice and has spoken out against gender-based violence, child abuse, and racism. She is also a patron of the Florence Masebe Foundation, which supports arts and culture development in rural areas.

In 2015, Florence suffered a tragic loss when her 18-month-old son drowned in a swimming pool at her home. She wrote a book titled The Heart Knows in 2018, in which she shared her grief and healing journey.
