Elizabeth Serunye is a South African actress and gospel singer, best known for her role as Principal Jacobeth Thobakgale in the popular television drama series Skeem Saam.

Early Life

Elizabeth Serunye was born on March 12, 1971, in Limpopo province, South Africa. Not much is known about her education qualifications. From a young age, she showed a talent for performing, beginning her singing career in her high school choir. After matriculating, she decided to pursue acting.

Acting and Music Career

Early Career and Struggles

Serunye’s professional acting career took time to develop. Despite her natural talent and passion for the craft, she faced numerous challenges early on. Mentored by seasoned actors Roseline Morapedi and Ramolao Makhene, she learned the intricacies of acting and received encouragement to persist despite difficulties. During this period, Serunye also worked at a supermarket to make ends meet.

Breakthrough and Recognition

Elizabeth Serunye’s big break came in the mid-2000s with roles in several television dramas such as Soul City, Home Affairs, and the comedy series Mzee Wa Two Six (2005). Her talent for both comedic and serious roles became evident, and she began to gain recognition in the South African entertainment industry.

Prominent Roles

One of her most notable roles is Principal Jacobeth Thobakgale in the SABC1 educational soapie Skeem Saam, which she joined in its second season. Her portrayal of Principal Thobakgale has made her one of Mzansi’s most beloved actors.

She has also played memorable comedic roles, such as Mapaseka Montsho, the tyrannical queen of the kitchen at the Cherry Blossom guest house in the SABC2 sitcom Moferefere Lenyalong. In Rhythm City, she portrayed Rose Nakumba, a character who balanced both tragic and comic elements as she dealt with an abusive husband and a rebellious teenager.

Gospel Music

In addition to her acting career, Elizabeth Serunye is a well-known gospel performer. She currently sings with the Exaltation Gospel Choir and has been involved in gospel music since her high school years.
