Oupa John Sefoka, professionally known as Sumbody, was a renowned South African disc jockey and radio presenter who gained popularity for his hit tracks “Ayepyep” which features DJ Tira, Thebe, and Emza, as well as “Monate Mpolaye” featuring Cassper Nyovest and Thebe.


He was born on the 9th of June in Pretoria, South Africa.


Sefoka completed his primary education at Sunnyside Primary School and his secondary education at Bokgoni Technical High School.

He then pursued his tertiary education at the Tshwane University of Technology but left before completing his studies to pursue his dream of becoming a disc jockey.


His career’s official launch can be traced back to his days as a volunteer producer and presenter, where he was the mastermind behind the popular show Mashaedi on the Engage, which aired on Tshwane.

In 2018, the renowned Deejay released a track named Monate Mpolaye, which quickly became a sensation in the South African music industry, earning him fame and various accolades.

Throughout his career, he has collaborated with and featured numerous other big names in the music industry, such as DJ Tira, Busiswa, Londie London, and Holly Rey. In addition to these, he has also worked with Busiswa, Cassper Nyovest, Kwesta, Zakes Bantwini, and Leehleza on various projects.


On December 6th, 2019, DJ Sumbody released an 18-track album called “Ashi Nthwela”.

The album showcases collaborations with notable artists such as DJ Tira, Busiswa, Cassper Nyovest, Holly Rey, Kwesta, Zakes Bantwini, Leehleza, Londie London, and more.


DJ Sumbody passed away after he was in Johannesburg. In a social media statement, Sefoka’s production company Sumsounds Music confirmed that he died in the early hours of Sunday, November 20th.

When he met his fate, the DJ was on his way to the All-White Picnic. Sefoka and his bodyguards were gunned down with over twenty bullet holes on his car. It is suspected that this ordeal was an organized manslaughter.
