Bonko Khoza is a South African actor and voice artist who has starred in several films and series, both locally and internationally.
Early Life and Education
Bonko Khoza was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. He developed an interest in acting and art from a young age. He attended the National School of Arts in Johannesburg, where he majored in Fine Arts and graduated in 2009. Following that, he dedicated two years to studying advertising and design before pursuing a two-year program in Performance and Theatre Skills at The Market Theatre Laboratory.
Bonko Khoza Acting Career
Bonko Khoza started his acting career in 2015 when he played the role of Jabz in the film Necktie Youth, which was directed by Sibs Shongwe-La Mer. The film was a critical success and was nominated for several awards, including the Best First Feature Award at the Berlin International Film Festival. Bonko’s performance as Jabz earned him a Best Actor Nomination at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Since then, Bonko has appeared in a number of films and series, both locally and internationally. Some of his notable works include:
- The Wife (2021): A Showmax original series, where he played the role of Mqhele Zulu, a loving, family man, haunted by a terrible temper. He chases what he wants until he gets it.
- The Mauritanian (2021): A legal drama film based on the true story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi, who was detained at Guantanamo Bay for 14 years without charge. Bonko played the role of Camp India Minder, one of the guards who interacted with Slahi.
- The Woman King (2022): An upcoming historical epic film starring Viola Davis and Lupita Nyong’o, based on the Dahomey Amazons, an all-female military unit in 18th-century West Africa. Bonko played the role of Boma, a warrior.
- The Brave Ones (2022): He plays the role of Nkosi in this Netflix special about a goddess reincarnated as a young woman who harnesses her divine powers to avenge her sister’s death and protect her family from destruction.
Bonko is also a seasoned voice artist who has worked with top brands in South Africa and abroad. He voiced the character of Daddy Jo in the animated series Kiya & the Kimoja Heroes (2023), which is about a group of African superheroes who use their powers to protect the environment.
Awards and Recognition
In 2022, Bonko Khoza won Best Actor in a Telenovela at the 2022 SA Film and Television Awards (Saftas) for his role as Mqhele on The Wife. He was also nominated for a Best Actor Nomination at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2015.
Bonko Khoza Personal Life
Bonko Khoza is married to Lesego Khoza, a fashion designer and entrepreneur. They have a daughter named Amahubo, born in August 2023.
