Bhekisizwe Mahlawe is a South African actor, entrepreneur, and media personality. He is best known for his roles as Nkanyiso in the SABC drama series Shreds and Dreams, and as Calvin Gumede in the e.tv soapie Durban Gen. He is also the founder of Borrowed Time Media, a company that hosts events and produces content, and the owner of Mzimcool, a clothing brand inspired by his hometown.
Early Life and Education
Bhekisizwe Mahlawe was born on March 1, 1990, in uMzimkhulu, a township in the Harry Gwala District Municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. He grew up in a family that did not support his dream of becoming an actor and instead encouraged him to pursue a teaching career.
He completed his matriculation at uMzimkhulu High School and enrolled at the University of Cape Town for a teaching degree. However, he dropped out after six months and moved to Durban to look for acting opportunities.
Bhekisizwe Mahlawe Career
Bhekisizwe Mahlawe started his acting career in 2010 when he landed a role in Mnyango Wesoku Vakasha, a local drama series. He then quit his job at Protea Hotel and relocated to Johannesburg, where he got a role in eKasi: Our Stories, an anthology series on e.tv. His family discovered his secret after they saw him on television.
Since then, he has appeared in several television shows, such as Rhythm City, Generations, Soul City, Emoyeni, Isibaya, Isidingo, Isithembiso, Judge Thenjiwe Khambule, and Shadow. He gained fame and recognition for his role as Nkanyiso in Shreds and Dreams, a drama series that follows the lives of four young women who share a flat in Johannesburg. He played the son of Nonto, who had to deal with the shame of being the product of rape.
In 2020, he joined the cast of Durban Gen, a medical drama that revolves around the staff and patients of Durban General Hospital. He plays Calvin Gumede, a nurse who is romantically involved with Dr Mbali Mthethwa, played by Nelisiwe Sibiya.
Besides acting, Bhekisizwe Mahlawe is also an entrepreneur and a media personality. He is the founder of Borrowed Time Media (BTM), a company that hosts parties and produces content for various platforms. He also owns Mzimcool, a clothing brand that reflects his culture and identity as a person from uMzimkhulu.

Bhekisizwe Mahlawe has kept his personal life private and has not revealed much about his relationship status. However, he has one child whom he loves dearly and often posts pictures of on his Instagram account. He once wrote: “No father is perfect, but we can only try and fix our fathers’ mistakes by perfecting our actions towards our children so that history doesn’t repeat itself”.
In August 2023, he survived a horrific car crash together with his friends, two Gqom artists, Bhar and Sosha Ngcobo. They were on their way to a gig in Hillcrest.
