Early Life

Aphiwe Mkefe was born and raised in Kwa-Langa, a small township in Cape Town, South Africa. As the eldest of nine children, he grew up in a vibrant and lively household. During his time at Pinelands High School, Skefe discovered his passion for sports, particularly basketball, where he even captained the school team. Alongside his athletic pursuits, he actively engaged in extracurricular activities, finding his voice in singing groups and eventually joining The Cape Town Ensemble, where he showcased his talent as a bass and baritone singer.

Aphiwe Mkefe’s journey in the entertainment industry began at the renowned AFDA film school, where he immersed himself in theater and screen performance for a year. He later completed his degree in film writing and directing, solidifying his foundation in the creative arts.

Mkefe’s fascination with acting was ignited at a young age when his aunt, who worked for SABC (South African Broadcasting Corporation), introduced him to the behind-the-scenes world of television production. Witnessing the creation of popular shows like Muvhango and Generations inspired him to pursue a career in acting. Following his graduation from Pinelands High School, he enrolled at AFDA film school, where he honed his skills in theatre and screen performance, as well as film writing and directing.

In 2019, Aphiwe Mkefe made an impressive debut in the industry with his role in the Mzansi Magic drama series ”Nkululeko”. Despite his young age, Skefe took on the lead role of Nkululeko Zwai, showcasing his talent and carrying the story with great depth and skill.

Continuing to explore his passion, Mkefe ventured into theatre and landed a significant role in the musical production ”Letters of Hope”. Adapted from the award-winning film of the same name, the production revolves around the story of Jeremiah, a 16-year-old aspiring policeman, set in 1976 apartheid South Africa.

Mkefe’s talent extended to the world of film, with notable appearances in productions such as ”Surviving Gaza” and ”Lakutshon’ilanga”, directed by Phumi Morare. His performance in ”Lakutshon’ilanga” earned international recognition and contributed to the film’s success.

In addition to his television and film work, Aphiwe Mkefe was part of the cast of the acclaimed show ”Lakutshon’ilanga”, where he played a lead role. The project received accolades such as the Student Academy Award for Best Film in 2021 and an NAACP Award.

In 2023, Mkefe joined the cast of ”The Kings of Queenstown”, a Netflix production directed by Jamil X.T Qubeka.
