Early Life and Education

Ama Qamata’s journey began in the picturesque Eastern Cape village of Cala, situated within the Sakhisizwe Local Municipality. At the tender age of three, she embarked on a significant move with her family to the vibrant city of Johannesburg.

Her passion for the arts, particularly acting, was ignited during her school days when she actively participated in various school productions. This early exposure to the world of performance set the stage for her future career. Ama’s first foray into the world of entertainment commenced with appearances in advertisements, marking the initial steps in her remarkable journey.

As part of her educational pursuit, Ama Qamata attended Reddam House Bedfordview, an esteemed institution known for its commitment to academic excellence and fostering artistic talent. After successfully completing her matriculation in 2016, she decided to take a gap year to explore various opportunities and contemplate her future path.

In pursuit of her passion for the performing arts, Ama enrolled at the University of Cape Town, where she embarked on a journey to obtain a degree in Theatre and Performance.

Although she initially embarked on this academic path, she made the difficult decision to withdraw from the institution during her second year, choosing instead to focus on her budding acting career.

Ama Qamata’s remarkable career trajectory showcases her exceptional talent and dedication to the world of acting. Her debut on the television screen occurred when she was just 17 years old, portraying the character Naledi in the situation comedy My Perfect Family on SABC1.

However, it was in 2020 that Ama Qamata’s star began to shine even brighter. She joined the cast of the widely acclaimed Gomora, a Mzansi Magic series, where she brought the character Buhle to life. Her performance in this series earned her recognition and appreciation from both audiences and industry peers.

Later in the same year, Ama Qamata made waves on the international stage when she appeared in Netflix’s Blood & Water. In this captivating series, she portrayed the lead character, Puleng Khumalo, a determined young woman on a quest to prove that a successful swimmer from a prestigious private school is, in fact, her abducted sister. Her exceptional acting skills and captivating portrayal of Puleng earned her accolades and further solidified her status as a rising star.

Notably, Ama Qamata’s journey to Blood & Water was facilitated by Kutlwano Ditsele, the casting director for the series.
