Despite her early interest in acting, Ayivor’s father insisted she pursue a more traditional career path, leading her to study law at the University of Cape Town. However, Ayivor dropped out in her third year to follow her passion for acting. She enrolled in a two-year diploma course in Acting and Presentation at City Varsity, graduating in 1998.

Ayivor’s first significant role came when she auditioned for Boesman and Lena, where she served as a stand-in for Angela Bassett. This opportunity allowed her to refine her acting skills. She soon landed the role of Lerato, a drug-addicted alcoholic prostitute, on the popular South African soap opera Generations. Ayivor’s portrayal of Lerato from 2000 to 2004 garnered significant attention, although it also led to some public misunderstanding of her character’s actions.

Following her stint on Generations, Ayivor took on the role of Kwezi in the controversial drama This Life on SABC 3. She further expanded her horizons by appearing in the Canadian science fiction drama Charlie Jade. The difficulty in finding work due to language barriers prompted Ayivor to diversify her career, turning to film, voice-over work, and scriptwriting.

In 2016, she bagged a role on a biographical romantic film called A United Kingdom.

The romantic film tells the true story of Botswana’s first president, Seretse Khama, who caused a worldwide stir in the 1940s by marrying Ruth Williams, a white woman from London.

Abena Ayivor portrayed the role of Tshekedi’s wife.
